RESEARCH ~ PROTECTION ~ EDUCATION
The Whale Stewardship Project (WSP) takes a proactive approach to conservation, with on-site protection measures that include monitoring the whale and intervention in human activities when necessary.
The WSP makes recommendations for safe and appropriate conduct through a program that was developed with approval from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.
The WSP has achieved favourable results in an overall reduction of many high-risk human behaviours, increased safety for people visiting the whales and minimizing serious boat propeller injuries. However, there is much more that we would like to do. Please see How You Can Help.
Our research and experience in dealing with these complex human and whale interactive situations has enabled us to assist with similar issues in other parts of the world such as Costa Rica and Ireland.
